BM Patent Applications Maintain Growth Trend

Patent applications related to e-commerce rose 3.8% to 2,548 in the first half of this year compared with the same period one year ago.

With the cooling of the venture heat and disappearance of the BM patent boom, applications had declined since 2001, but rebounded to an increase starting in 2003 thanks to the activation of e-commerce. The growth trend is continuing this year.

In the first half of this year, numerous applications have been filed in various sectors: shopping mall and transaction systems (319 cases), games and amusement (206), search systems (182), education and medical (181), financial services (145), advertisement and publicity (135), and logistics and business management (114).

Owing to the expansion of online and mobile game markets and some search portals' active patent application strategies, in particular, BM patent applications increased by 154% and 107% in the game and search sectors, respectively, over the previous year.

In 2003, sales of online games and mobile games recorded 754.1 billion won and 145.8 billion won, respectively, reflecting year-on-year growths of 66.8% and 45%, according to the Games White Paper of the Culture and Tourism Ministry.

BM patent registrations in the first half of this year numbered 601, up about 14.5% from 2003. The growth is attributed to an increase in the number of patent-determined cases due to the shortened processing period for intermediate documents, which resulted in 3,200 examinations completed this year, up 50% compared with 2003.

Patent registrations by technology sector were shopping mall and transaction systems (67), search systems (60), financial systems (54), auction and receipt of orders (36), education and medical (36), etc.

Meanwhile, the patent determination rate of the BM sector in the first half of this year showed was significantly lower than other technology sectors. This was not only because of the large number of simple business ideas inappropriate for patent applications that were rejected because they lacked specific technology methods, but also because of the clear and consistent examination criteria applied to prevent unnecessary disputes over delinquent patent registrations.

The BM sector's patent determination rates were 25.4% in 2001, 22.5% in 2002, 15.8% in 2003 and 17.2% in the first half of 2004. These are comparable to 66.2% in the first half of this year in the electric/electronics sector.

KIPO plans to shorten the examination processing period further, prepare and distribute a patent map, which is drawing keen interest recently, by the end of the year and continue patent information-support activities, including implementation of BM patent consultancy service through the 'Internet Patent' corner on its homepage.
